starter motor pinion
they both have 9 but if it comes off a metro they had 10 so just count the teeth and you will be safe

starter motor
The spinning up is caused by the pinion of the starter motor disengaging from the starter ring on the flywheel, what solenoid do you have ? is it the one on the inner wing or the piggyback?

have you checked all the connections to the solenoid as this problem is generally caused by loss of voltage causing the solenoid to de activate. It may also be a bad earth to the inner wing itself, or at the battery end.

Starter motor?
I have rebuilt my auto 1983 mini using donor parts from a manual 1986 manual. After a number of problems i ended up putting a different engine in all together. Its now a 1L manual with a normal starter motor and solanoid, but the problem i have is the wiring is off a pre engaged starter/ solanoid... Can i put the pre engaged starter/solonoid on the enigne which has the early type starter and seperate solanoid? Any coments are greatly appreciated. Cheers

Yea that does cheers. Found the problem was wiring though so unfortunatly going to have to do the painful job of runing through it all and re-wiring the ignition part of the loom :(

ive got a 1991 1275 metro engine in place of a 1990 998 a+ mini engine. will the starter motor be a straight swap, as the metro one isnt cranking very fast? They both have the solenoid mounted on the starter motor. Help appreciated Leonard

Starter motor id
Trying to replace my starter motor for a lightweight, more powerful one as the hillclimber runs high compression, however... Ive taken my starter out, but I cant seem to match it to any Brise or Cambridge motorsport starter. Mine is fitted to an custom A+ engine, it has 10 teeth, about 30mm o/diameter with a seperate solenoid. When the engine was built I think Bill fitted different ringgear for me, but that was a while ago... Any help appreciated! BB

Starter Motor
I have a 1986 mini 998. It runs fine most of the time but twice in the last week the starter motor would not turn over. The battery is 100%, all I get is a click. The second time it happened I left it a day and then went to try it and it started fine. Basically where should I start, renew the soleniod, clean the starter motor itself, or replace it.

Trouble shooting the starter motor?
Hi, i have a problem with my mini. it doesnt seem to want to start and i suspect its the starter so i bought one from ebay that said it was brand new and that doesnt work either......my battery is fully charged and when i turn the key i hear a clicking sound which is the relay under the bonnet but nothing else... is the relay supposed to click? and my car is a 1988 mini mayair 1000

The clicking you hear is the starter solenoid operating. If the starter doesn't turn at all, and you're absolutely sure the battery is fully charged, it may be something as simple as a bad connection - either at the battery end or the starter end, or a bad earth connection at the engine. If all looks well, then I would recommend taking the starter off and connecting it directly to the battery and see if it works like that.

I dont htink its the solenoid, its coming from a very small metal box with 5 wires coming from it... if your looking under the bonnet its at the top left side screwed to the side of the car.. Is that supposed to click?

That's the starter solenoid relay, which actuates the starter solenoid, as fitted to later cars.
Does the starter motor have a solenoid piggie-backed onto it, or is it just the plain round starter motor with a remotely mounted solenoid ?
If you have the remote solenoid system you shouild check all the wiring to it, check that it's mounted onto a clean bit of metal too because it's metal bracket has to be earthed in order for it to work, and check your fuses too.
I think it's time to get the voltmeter out and use the wiring diagrams

ok ive tested the 4 fuses and they are all fine, everything works except the starter....the starter is the one with the solenoid mounted onto it and ive ordered a new relay switch and im not sure where to aquire a good wireing diagram can you help point me in the right direction for one on the internet ?
my car is a 1988 mayfair 998

LOl, I grin whenever I see the title of this thread....
Trouble shooting the starter motor ? Then get someone to hold it down as you pull the trigger......
There was a Haynes online manual link posted in the past few weeks...I think it was on this forum, but if not, try one of these other resources....

starter motor, two solenoids?!
Hi
My mini won't start, I've narrowed it down to probably the starter motor. The problem is, I've been checking my Haynes and autodata manuals, and I'm really confused! Going by photos in the manuals it appears that I have a pre engaged starter motor, which has the solenoid attached, but there is a solenoid on the inner wing, so it looks like I have two solenoids! Am I going crazy?
The engine was a replacement before I bought the car 3 years ago, so I don't know the age of it to narrow down what starter should be there.
How do I work out which starter motor to replace it with, without spending bucketloads of money?

If you've got the pre-engaged starter then the thing you can see on the inner wing should be the starter relay, not a solenoid.

get a length of wire, make sure the car is out of gear, turn your ignition on,attatch one end to a live on the fuse box, pull the spade end off the starter that operates the starter, and with the other end of your lead, touch the male spae on the starter and see if it turns over and fires.
you have not said what year your car is, but later minis have a relay on the bulkhead, on the off side, if the engine starts then you need to be looking at this, or a faulty ignition switch. If the starter does not turn over then check the earth leads, and if the starter still aint turning, then its favorite, but check with jump leads in a vice to be 100%. and Always check a starter motor befor fitting by the same method if you can, put in a vice, andd jump leads and then put a feed onto the solenoid on the pre engaged bit, earlier ones are easier, two wires only.
